First Public Meeting: 19 July 2024

Dear Fellow Residents,

We are writing to invite you to a public meeting at Shottery Memorial Hall on Friday 19 July 2024 to discuss the formation of a formal North Shottery Residents Association.

The primary concern prompting this initiative is traffic on Shottery Road, particularly at school drop‑off and pick‑up times. During these periods, problems become acute due to:

  1. The high number of buses passing through the village, where on‑street parking reduces the road to a single carriageway;
  2. Commuters using Shottery as a cut‑through between the town centre/Evesham Road and Alcester Road;
  3. The combined effect of these pressures leading to vehicles mounting the pavement, endangering pedestrians, causing collisions, and contributing to road‑rage incidents outside residents’ homes.

Warwickshire County Council has been slow to respond to longstanding concerns. Several measures are currently under consideration, including:

  • Double yellow lines alongside the small green adjacent to Orchardside;
  • A traffic census to better understand vehicle movements;
  • Completion of the proposed “relief road” linked to the adjacent Shottery housing development, which has yet to be connected and for which no timetable has been set.

Possible longer‑term solutions that residents may wish to explore include:

  • Blocking the road beyond the Girls’ Grammar School, similar to the arrangement between Shottery Fields, the College, and the School/Sixth Form;
  • Introducing a one‑way system from The Bell towards the town;
  • Installing bollards along the kerb around the bend outside The Posting House.

Experience in other communities shows that a formal residents association can be an effective way to represent local views, coordinate action, and lobby decision‑makers for meaningful change.

The meeting will include input from representatives of the County Council, Town Council, and our Member of Parliament, and will provide an opportunity for residents to ask questions, share experiences, and help shape next steps.

We hope you will be able to attend and look forward to your support and involvement in improving safety and quality of life in North Shottery.

Yours sincerely,
North Shottery Residents Association (proposed)
